  1. 1

The first firefly blinked above Bao’s garden gate like a tiny lantern deciding where to go. Then a hundred more floated up, joining glow to glow until a golden path curled in the air. Sao’s star pendant shimmered, and his tail began to wag.

  2. 2

Bao opened the gate, and the map drifted forward as if it had been waiting just for them. Beyond the yard, the forest glowed silver-blue under the moon. “Do you think it knows a secret?” Bao whispered. Sao gave one bright yip, which meant yes and hurry.

  3. 3

Inside the trees, the firefly map changed shape with every step. It drew a bridge, erased it, then painted three shining dots beside a fern. Bao laughed, but the forest answered with a low rustle, and his fingers found the strap of his backpack.

  4. 4

A bush beside the path shook once, twice, and threw a huge crooked shadow across the leaves. Bao stopped so fast Sao bumped his sneaker. “That shadow looks like a giant,” Bao said, his voice small. Sao leaned warm against his leg instead of running ahead.

  5. 5

Bao took one slow breath and held out his hand for Sao to sniff. “I’m scared of that shadow,” he said. Together they looked again. The fireflies brightened the bush, and a plump little night bird hopped out, blinking as if Bao and Sao had startled it too.

  6. 6

The fireflies drifted above a mossy stump, then swirled into glowing paths that bent and brightened like rivers in the air. Bao held his breath as one tiny light landed on Sao’s star pendant. “I think it wants us to follow,” Sao whispered, trying to sound braver than his twitching tail.

  7. 7

The glowing path led to a curtain of dangling silver vines. Bao pushed one vine aside, but the forest beyond looked darker than ink spilled between trees. His smile slipped a little. “My tummy feels jumpy,” he said, and Sao pressed his warm side against Bao’s sneaker.

  8. 8

A huge shape hunched across the trail, and Sao squeaked before he could stop himself. Bao’s hand found Sao’s shoulder. Together they watched the shape carefully until the moon moved, and the monster became a crooked log wearing a crown of ferns.

  9. 9

Feeling proud, Bao hurried after the brightest cluster of fireflies. Sao bounded beside him, paws pattering fast over leaves. But the lights suddenly scattered, and the path under them sank with a soft squelch, sending Bao’s blue sneaker ankle-deep into cold mud.

  • 10

Bao froze, cheeks hot even in the cool forest. “I ran before we knew,” he said softly. Sao hooked his tail around Bao’s wrist while Bao gripped a root with both hands, and together—slow, muddy, and laughing a little—they pulled free.

  • 11

Just as the fireflies shaped a bright arrow, a cold little wind slipped between the trees and scattered them like spilled sparks. The path ahead vanished into a tunnel of leaning roots. Bao reached for Sao’s warm fur and whispered, “I don’t like when the map goes away.”

  • 12

A huge shape lifted behind the roots, tall as a house and crowned with twisting antlers. Sao’s tail puffed, and Bao felt his knees turn wobbly. “My scared feeling says it’s a monster,” Bao said, trying not to run, “but my eyes need more light.”

  • 13

Sao pressed his star pendant against Bao’s hand, a tiny gold dot in the dark. They took one step, then another, counting the soft crunch of leaves together. When the fireflies drifted closer, the antlers became branches, and the giant became an old stump wearing vines.

  • 14

Behind the stump, the missing fireflies trembled inside a bellflower, trapped by sticky moonweb. Bao’s fear changed shape; it was still there, but now it had room for helping. Sao nipped one silver strand loose, and Bao used a twig to lift the rest away.

  • 15

Freed at last, the fireflies rose around Bao and Sao in a grateful spiral. This time their map did not draw an arrow; it drew two small circles moving side by side. Bao smiled through the last shiver. “It knows we’re braver together.”

  • 16

At the foot of the silver hill, a tall shape hunched across the path. Bao’s fingers tightened around Sao’s pendant cord, then he stopped pulling. “It looks like a monster,” he whispered, “but I want to check before I run.”

  • 17

Sao pressed his warm side against Bao’s leg. Together they took three small steps, and the fireflies lifted higher. The terrible ears became two fern fronds, the hunched back became an old mossy log, and Bao let out a shaky laugh.

  • 18

The fireflies whirled in a joyful spiral, pleased with their wiser choice. Their golden trail drew a bridge of light over the last puddle and pointed to a hollow tree glowing like a tiny house. Inside, something softly chimed in answer.

  • 19

In the hollow tree sat the littlest firefly, its light blinking like a sleepy heartbeat. Bao opened his backpack and made a soft roof with his handkerchief while Sao nudged the pendant close for warmth. Soon the little glow rose, bright enough to join the map.

  • 20

The completed map floated above them, then gently folded into a path leading home. Bao tucked one arm around Sao and smiled at the friendly dark between the trees. “I was scared,” he said, “and we found out together.”
