  1. 1

At low tide, Bao spotted a round golden hatch blinking beneath a curtain of seaweed. Sao’s star pendant flashed as he hopped closer, whiskers trembling with delight. The tide pool burbled once, and a tiny submarine rose like a moon from the water.

  2. 2

The hatch popped open with a cheerful puff of bubbles. Out waved Captain Octopus, wearing eight tiny gloves and a smile as gentle as warm soup. “Welcome aboard, explorers,” she said. “The kelp forest is glowing today, but first comes my safety check.”

  3. 3

Inside, the submarine smelled faintly of toast and salty air. Windows curved around Bao and Sao, showing silver fish drifting past like sleepy ribbons. Bao reached for a shiny lever, but Captain Octopus softly curled one arm around it. “Not yet, brave hands.”

  4. 4

Bao tucked his hand back and felt his cheeks grow warm. Sao bumped his knee, not laughing, just saying with his soft fox eyes, I’m here. Captain Octopus pointed around the cabin: listen first, look together, click what needs clicking, then sail.

  5. 5

Captain Octopus gave Bao a small blue helmet and Sao a bubble-bright collar. Bao waited until she nodded, then fastened his strap with a neat click. Sao stood very still for his turn, tail wiggling only at the tip, while the submarine lights warmed to green.

  6. 6

The submarine slipped between tall ribbons of kelp that waved like green flags. Bao pressed both hands to the round window, and Sao’s pendant flashed gold in the watery light. Ahead, pearl caves shimmered softly, as if the ocean had tucked away a sky full of moons.

  7. 7

Captain Octopus floated down from the control seat with a bright blue explorer bubble in each arm. “Cave walk after safety check,” he said, tapping his cap with one careful tentacle. Bao nodded fast, but Sao was already sniffing toward the hatch where silver bubbles popped and sparkled.

  8. 8

Before Bao could ask which strap came first, Sao bounced into one explorer bubble, tail swishing with triumph. Bao laughed and stepped into the other, leaving one little side clasp hanging open on his backpack. The bubbles lifted them gently off the floor, bobbing like two balloons with ideas.

  9. 9

The hatch opened with a hush, and the bubbles floated into the kelp forest. Bao’s loose backpack clasp caught a curly strand of kelp, turning him slowly sideways. Sao’s smile shrank. “Bao?” he squeaked, paddling close but waiting instead of grabbing.

  • 10

Captain Octopus glided out with a calm wave, and the submarine’s soft helper arms steadied Bao’s bubble. Nothing was broken, but Bao’s cheeks warmed. “I skipped the check,” he said. Sao pressed his paws together and whispered, “Can we start again, Captain?”

  • 11

Beyond the kelp forest, the pearl cave opened like a moonlit mouth. Sao bounced on his paws, but the submarine gave a sudden shudder, and three silver shells outside began to turn in different directions. Captain Octopus’s smile softened. “The cave likes things done in order.”

  • 12

A pearly lever gleamed beside Sao, exactly at fox-cub height. Before Bao could ask, Sao nudged it with his nose, and the cave lights blinked sleepy purple. The submarine tilted just enough to roll Bao’s backpack against his ankle. Sao’s ears drooped. “I only wanted to help.”

  • 13

Bao’s cheeks felt hot, because he had been thinking about the treasure too. “I didn’t remind him to wait,” he said, rubbing his sneaker on the floor. Captain Octopus nodded, not cross at all. “A good crew repairs the moment together. First, we pause and listen.”

  • 14

They tried again, slowly enough to notice. Bao watched Captain Octopus tap the air gauges before the steering pearl, and Sao checked that his pendant cord was tucked away from the levers. When Bao copied the order, the submarine stopped tilting, as if it had taken a deep breath.

  • 15

One by one, the silver shells outside folded open, scattering bubbles like tiny bells. Sao pressed close to Bao, not rushing this time, and Bao grinned at him. The pearl gate welcomed them into a cavern bright with treasure—but the proudest sparkle was Sao’s careful smile.

  • 16

Beyond the pearl caves, a silver current twirled straight toward the glowing treasure bell. Sao’s paws bounced with excitement, but Bao noticed Captain Octopus resting one careful tentacle on the lever. “Wait,” Bao said softly. “We promised to hear the whole sequence first.”

  • 17

Captain Octopus smiled so wide his cheeks made bubbles. Bao checked the window seal until the green glow blinked steady, and Sao tugged once on the safety line, then nodded. Only after each little sign was ready did the submarine hum forward.

  • 18

The submarine slipped through the silver current as smoothly as a spoon through soup. At the cave’s heart, Sao tapped the pearl bell, and a note rang warm and round through the water. Tiny lantern fish whirled up, making a crown of light around them.

  • 19

On the way back, Captain Octopus lowered his sailor cap to Bao and Sao. “Brave is good,” he said, “but brave with checking brings everyone home.” Bao felt his backpack settle against his shoulders, not heavy at all, but proud.

  • 20

That evening, Bao and Sao sat on the dock with their toes and paws tucked close, watching the sea blink with moonlit ripples. Sao’s star pendant shone like a tiny lighthouse. Bao whispered, “Next adventure, we check first,” and Sao leaned against him, smiling.
