    Under the old fig tree, where the roots curled like sleeping dragons, Bao heard water singing. Sao’s ears popped up, and the golden star on his pendant glimmered. Between two mossy stones, a blue-green glow breathed in the dark, as if the forest were keeping a wonderful secret.

    Bao ran to the picnic blanket where Grandpa Minh was pouring tea. “There’s a river under the tree!” Bao whispered, trying not to burst. Grandpa Minh lifted his lantern and smiled. “Then we will look together—slow feet, bright eyes, and nobody goes near the water without me.”

    Grandpa Minh checked the stone steps first, tapping each one with his walking stick. Bao held the lantern handle with him, and Sao padded close enough for his tail to brush Bao’s sock. Down they went, into cool air that smelled of rain, roots, and moonlit leaves.
