The Five-Toy Cleanup

Mama sat on her heels. “You found all the blocks, little one. What kind could go home next?” Kiki glanced around. Animals had fuzzy ears and tails. Cars had wheels. A wooden carrot rolled by her foot. Kiki did not grab it. She tapped one tiny car. “Wheels next,” she said.

Kiki crawled to the table and peered underneath. Two blue cars slept in the shadow. A red bus leaned against a chair leg. She put the tiny car in her paw beside them. “Only wheels,” she whispered. The wooden carrot rolled closer, bright and bumpy, but Kiki let it wait.

Kiki found a truck, a scooter, and a round yellow wheel that had popped off something. She stacked them in her arms. The truck slid. The scooter tipped. Clatter! A car rolled back under the table. Kiki’s whiskers drooped. “My paws are too full,” she said.

Mama did not hurry her. She set the car bin on the floor, close enough to reach. “Try a little line,” Mama said. Kiki pushed one car, then the bus, then the truck. Wheel by wheel, they bumped across the rug. Her basket stayed empty. Her paws felt light again.

At the bin, Kiki lifted each vehicle in. Click for the blue car. Clunk for the bus. Rumble for the truck. The loose yellow wheel went into a little cup beside the bin. “It belongs with wheel things,” Kiki decided. The path on the rug grew longer and clear.

Kiki stood where the cars had crowded. Now the road mat showed its curvy gray path. She drove one finger along it, slow and pleased. The animals still waited by the cushion. The snack-shop cloth still sagged. But the wheels were home, and the playroom felt less buzzy.

Kiki looked at the animals by the cushion. A fox lay on its side. Three sheep hid under a scarf. “Animals next, little one?” Mama asked. Kiki nodded, then scooped up blocks too. Her arms grew lumpy again. “Oops,” she said. “Blocks are not animals.”

Mama slid the animal basket beside Kiki’s knee. Kiki set the red block back on the rug. Then she picked up only soft paws and tails. Fox first. Sheep next. A tiny bear peeked from behind the cushion. Kiki smiled. “You go with the quiet animals.”

The last sheep plopped into the basket. The cushion sprang back round and smooth. Kiki patted it with both paws. There was room to sit now. The snack-shop cloth still drooped from the table, and blocks still dotted the rug. But the animal corner felt calm.

Kiki’s own block basket waited by the shelf. She lifted one yellow block, then one green, then two red ones together. Too many made her wobble, so she made a small train on the floor. Slide, slide, slide. The blocks traveled home without spilling.

Kiki and Mama stood in the middle of the playroom. Cars rested in their bin. Animals curled in their basket. Blocks shone in Kiki’s basket. The rug had space for feet, paws, and a new game tomorrow. Kiki breathed in. “We did little groups, little one,” she said. “Now the room feels sunny.”
