Sana’s Shade-Seeking Adventure

Sana dug one weed, then two. A ladybug climbed a tomato stem. Sana watched it, smiling, until her tongue felt dry. She licked her lips. “My mouth feels dusty,” she said. Papa lifted a water bottle from the bag. “That is your body asking for a drink.” Sana took three noisy gulps.

little one pointed to the bean arch. Under the leaves, the ground looked cool and spotted with shade. Sana carried her water bottle there and sat with Papa. The air felt softer. Her ears rested under the hat. “The garden is still here,” Sana said, surprised. Papa nodded. “Shade is part of playing outside.”

After the shady rest, Sana wanted the sunny path again. “Just one more tomato,” she said, hopping up. She left the water bottle under the bean arch. Papa tapped the striped bag. “Let’s bring it along.” Sana sighed. “It is heavy.” She carried it anyway, bump-bump against her leg.

A warm breeze fluttered the tomato leaves. Sana bent to pull a weed, and her turquoise hat slid over one eye. “I can’t see my worm friend,” she grumbled. She pushed the hat back too far. Now her nose sat in full sun, hot and tickly.

Papa crouched beside her. “May I fix the brim?” Sana nodded, rubbing her warm nose. Papa snugged the soft band and tipped the brim forward, not too low. Sana blinked. She could see the worm, the weed, and her paws. Her nose felt shady again. “That is better,” she said.

Sana reached high to tie a tomato stem. Her shoulder peeked from under her sleeve. The sun warmed it quickly. “This bit feels toasty,” she said. Papa looked. “That is a spot we covered earlier, but sleeves can wiggle.” He squeezed a small dab of sunscreen onto his paw.

Sana made a face. “Sticky again?” “Only a little,” Papa said. “Then you can tie the stem.” Sana held still for one slow breath. Papa rubbed the dab until it disappeared. Sana touched the dry fur beside it, then the protected spot. “Both feel like me now,” she said, and tied the tomato gently.

The path to the strawberry bed shone bright and white. Sana skipped, then slowed. Her paws felt warm through the dust. “It is very sunny here, little one,” Papa said. Sana looked at the bean arch, stripy with shade. “I can pick from there,” she decided, and turned toward the cooler leaves.

Under the bean arch, the air smelled green and damp. Sana set down her bag and reached for a red strawberry. Her water bottle rolled against her foot. “I am not thirsty,” she said. Then she licked her dry lip. Papa opened the bottle. Sana took three small gulps. “Cold,” she smiled.

A garden neighbor waved from a bench by the marigolds. “Come see my tiny carrots!” Sana hurried over and sat in the open sun. The bench felt hot on her tail. She popped up with a squeak. “Too warm!” Papa moved her striped bag to the shady end. Sana sat there instead, tail tucked safe and cool.

From the shady bench, Sana could still see plenty. A watering can waited by the lettuce. “I will water those,” she said. She checked herself: hat on, shoulder covered, water bottle in the bag. Papa gave a nod. Together they carried the can along the shady side of the bed, splish, slosh, slow.

At closing time, the garden glowed gold. Sana tucked one tomato and one strawberry into her striped bag. “I played in sun and shade,” she told Papa. “And you helped me take care,” Papa said. Sana tipped her turquoise brim to her nose. “Tomorrow, little one, we bring the water first.”
