The Glasshouse of Two Tides

“Pip,” Lumi whispered, “I am happy it gets an island.” Her voice wobbled. “And I don’t want it to go.” The pink tide lifted its head in the channel, listening. The half-open shell trembled, waiting, as if the next true word might change everything.

Lumi let the smile fall off her face, and it landed nowhere—nothing cracked. She touched the shell rim with one hand and the damp corner of her eye with the other. Pip leaned close, not fixing, just staying. The pink tide rose in a soft curl and painted the closed flowers with rose light.

Where Lumi’s teardrop slipped from her finger, it plinked into the blue tide’s edge. Instead of washing it away, the blue tide made room, and the pink tide folded beside it like a ribbon. A nearby blossom opened both colors at once. Pip’s ears lifted. “It can hold two!”

Lumi wiped her cheek with her sleeve, then gave the seedboat its blanket of moss a careful tuck. “I want to tell it both things,” she said. Pip scampered to gather a fallen blue petal and a fallen pink petal. Together they laid them by the sprout like two small flags for one journey.

Lumi stood straight, though her knees still felt like jellyfish. “I’m glad you’ll grow big,” she told the sprout, “and I’ll miss your little leaves at breakfast.” Pip placed one paw on the shell beside her hand. The launch shell opened another thumb-width, and the tide-lift burbled awake.

The tide-lift rose smoothly this time, carrying Lumi, Pip, and the seedboat toward the roof. Then a gull cried outside, sharp and faraway, like the new island calling. Lumi’s chest squeezed shut. She chirped, “Wheee!” much too brightly, and the lift jolted sideways with a wet hiccup.

They bumped onto the roof platform just as the two tides climbed the glass walls from opposite sides. Blue morning rushed on Lumi’s left; pink sunset climbed on her right. The seedboat’s lantern fluttered fast. Pip looked at Lumi, not the island. “No pretending this high up,” he whispered.

Lumi took one breath that shook, and another that steadied. She held the seedboat’s shell prow and looked at its waving little shadow. “I’m happy for your faraway forest,” Lumi said. “I’m sad for our empty windowsill. I love you in both places.” Pip pressed his forehead to her arm.

The launch shell opened wide as a moonflower. The blue tide and pink tide kissed at the roof edge, lifting the seedboat on a shining seam between them. Lumi let go when the water tugged gently. Pip waved both paws as the little boat slid toward the new island, lantern root bright as a starfish.

For a moment, Lumi’s hands felt too empty. Pip found one last moss crumb stuck to his paw and offered it like treasure. Lumi laughed, this time small and true, and tucked the crumb into her pocket. “For tomorrow’s windowsill,” she said, and Pip smiled as the roof bells rang clear.

At dawn, Lumi and Pip reached home with salt on Lumi’s boots and Pip’s paws, and pink-blue light in their pockets. On Lumi’s windowsill, the moss crumb opened into two tiny leaves—one sunrise gold, one rainy-day blue. Far across the water, the new island blinked with a green-gold speck, as if breakfast had waved back.
