The Sunbeam Stilts Above Buttercup Square

Lumi’s cheeks warmed hotter than the sunrise. All week, she had liked practicing only because the ground was near and Pip made silly marching songs. Up here, there was no starting over, no smaller poles, and no song loud enough to hide her fluttering heart.

Lumi did not move forward. She pressed her copper toe-ring lightly against the beam and felt it answer with a small, steady ting. Pip’s thin ribbon of light shivered beside her. The beam was not asking for bravery faces or big jumps. It was waiting for the next beat.

Pip held his breath again, cheeks puffed like two little buns. Lumi saw exactly when his beam went pale. “Not your feet,” she whispered. “Your breath.” Pip let one squeaky puff escape, and the ribbon under him widened from thread to spoon-handle thick.

Lumi’s heart still fluttered, but now it had something to hold. She made her voice low and drum-soft. “I’ll say the first word. You say the next.” Pip nodded hard enough to jiggle his whiskers. Together, they looked only at the next golden spot.

“Step,” said Lumi, and her foot landed. “Tap,” said Pip, touching his toe-ring down with a bright click. They both breathed, long and slow, and the two beams turned clear and strong. Behind them, one bubble wagon drifted level again, bubbles trembling but not popping.

Then a sharp sparkle flashed from the chime’s rim straight into Lumi’s eyes. She blinked, stepped too soon, and her beam squealed thin under her heel. Pip gasped, and his own tap landed late. For one wobbling moment, both stilts bent like hot noodles.

Lumi wanted to grab for the air, for Captain Marigold, for anything except the shaking light. But her foot remembered the dusty practice yard. Her knees remembered the silly marching songs. She whispered, not loud, not fancy, “Step.” Then she waited for the beam to listen.

The beam warmed beneath Lumi. “Tap,” she said, and the copper ring sang out. Pip heard it—not as a scold, but as an invitation. He tapped after her, small and true. They breathed together, and sunlight rushed down both stilts in a golden waterfall.

Now the path held them like warm glass. Lumi and Pip crossed the last bright span together, step-tap-breathe, step-tap-breathe. Lumi reached the chime rope, and Pip steadied the beam beside her. Bong! The sound rolled over Buttercup Square, and the landing beams bloomed wide.

The parade rolled safely into the square, bells laughing and wheels puffing cloud. Pip leaned close to Lumi while confetti-bubbles floated past. “I thought I ruined it,” he said. Lumi bumped his shoulder gently. “You found the breath. I lost it too, for a blink.”

When the last wagon rolled in, the tall stilts folded themselves into tiny sunbeam spoons. Lumi and Pip used them to stir honey into breakfast clouds for everyone. Far below, a new little beam blinked awake, tapping softly by itself, as if practicing for tomorrow.
