The Cloud Pirates’ Shared Treasure

The treasure cloud drifted farther away, bobbing behind the silver wind. Ember’s ears drooped. “My sniffing made us wiggle.” Milo looked at the map, then at his friend. “My steering did too. Maybe our plan needs changing before we chase again.”

Just as the treasure compass began to hum, a giant knot of peach cloud rolled across the ship’s path. Milo grabbed the wheel with both hands, while Ember leapt toward the sail rope, but the rope was tangled around a silver cloud-bell. The ship slowed with a soft, shuddery sigh.

Milo tried to steer, untangle, and read the compass all at once. His smile slipped sideways. “I thought captains had to do everything,” he admitted, as the ship drifted in a slow circle and the treasure glow blinked farther away.

Ember’s ears lowered, then lifted again. “I can smell the warm wind gaps,” the fox cub said, touching his star pendant. “But I cannot steer from down here.” Milo looked at the spinning wheel, then at his friend, and felt the plan click into a kinder shape.

Milo tied his backpack strap safely out of the way and stood on tiptoe at the wheel. Ember climbed to the lookout cushion where the breeze curled strongest. “You call the wind gaps, I’ll steer through them,” Milo said, and this time the ship answered with a happy creak.

“Left of the cinnamon cloud!” Ember called. Milo turned, not too fast, and the ship slipped through a glowing gap just wide enough for its smiling prow. Behind them, the cloud knot loosened into ribbons, and the treasure compass shone steady as a tiny sun.

The treasure cloud sagged under too many eager boots, and the silver chest slid toward the misty edge. Milo grabbed the rope, then stopped pulling alone. “Ember, you steer the wind-kite. I’ll anchor us.” Ember’s ears perked. “Together, before it tumbles!”

Ember tugged the kite left, but the ship tilted right, making Milo’s sneakers squeak across the deck. Milo called, not angry, just clear, “New plan—less left, more lift!” Ember nodded and flicked his tail, catching a warm updraft that puffed like a pillow.

The chest drifted back onto the deck with a cozy thump. Milo tied his knot around the mast, and Ember pressed both front paws on the latch. The cloud pirates cheered, but Milo grinned at Ember first. “Your lift saved it.” “Your knot held it,” Ember said.

Inside the chest was no mountain of coins, only jars of captured sunrise, cloud-seeds, and one tiny brass compass that pointed toward whoever needed help. Captain Nimbus bowed. “Best treasure for a crew is knowing how to crew.” Milo and Ember shared the biggest smile.

At sunset, the ship lowered them onto a soft cloud beside Milo’s rooftop garden. Ember’s pendant glowed like a little star as Milo leaned close and whispered, “Next time, we choose the goal together first.” Ember tucked against his knee, already dreaming of the wind.
