The First Skip Across Cinnamon Clouds

Lumi crouched and laid one palm on the sagging cloud. It trembled under her fingers, then lifted the tiniest bit when she leaned forward instead of back. Pip noticed too; the basket handle swung toward the next skipstone, and a cinnamon puff curled upward like a friendly answer.

“It likes forward,” Lumi whispered. She shifted her knee toward the waiting cloud, and the path bobbed higher, stone by stone, as if waking up for breakfast. When Pip shuffled one paw forward, the cloud under them stopped sinking and gave a soft, cinnamony boing.

Pip set the basket between them and tapped the cloud with his tail. “Toe, heel, wait,” he said, making the words small enough to hold. Lumi tried the rhythm without crossing yet: toe press, heel soften, wait for the warm bounce to come back.

They made the basket part of the plan. Pip would hop first to the near edge, Lumi would step after, and Pip would keep one paw while Lumi kept one hand on the handle until the cloud answered. The next skipstone bobbed closer, no longer teasing, but inviting.

Pip hopped, and Lumi followed toe-heel-wait. For a blink, it worked beautifully; then Lumi peeked down through the blue space and forgot to wait. Her heel thumped hard, the cloud sprang sideways, and one moon-muffin popped from under the napkin like a tiny moon.

Pip caught the muffin against his vest, but the path ahead began to sink in a slow wave. Lumi’s cheeks burned. She looked at the basket, then at Pip’s steady paws, and breathed out. “Toe first,” she said, though her voice shook like a spoon in a cup.

Lumi placed her toe, softened her heel, and waited for the bounce to lift her instead of surprise her. Pip moved with her, basket swinging between them. One cloud rose, then the next, then the next, until their steps made a cinnamon rhythm across the morning.

They reached the last cloud just as the bell shrank to a sleepy spark. Lumi stretched the basket up while Pip nudged the final skipstone higher with one brave paw-step. The sky-farmers’ barn doors floated open, and the bell filled with warm yellow light again.

On the barn porch, Lumi checked the basket and found the rescued muffin dented on one silver side. She looked at Pip’s cinnamon-dusted vest. “I’m sorry I thumped.” Pip brushed crumbs from his whiskers and grinned. “I’m glad you tried again. Also, this one smells extra brave.”

The sky-farmers shared breakfast on a table anchored to the dawn. Lumi and Pip sat close, knees touching, while the dented muffin rested between them. Under Lumi’s swinging foot, a tiny new cloud puffed up—just one small skipstone, waiting for after breakfast.
