The Acorn Railway Under the Bark

The train rolled out beside a busy squirrel workshop, where wooden wheels spun and nut shells chimed in neat bowls. A little squirrel blinked at the breakfast baskets and said, kindly, “Oh dear—tree mice live three tunnels over.” Milo’s cheeks warmed as the train ticked softly behind him.

The acorn train burst from the sap tunnel into a round hollow where three tracks curled away like chestnut ribbons. Milo saw their breakfast cart rattling toward a sign carved with sleeping bat shapes, not the cozy mouse burrow from the bark map. Ember’s ears dipped. “That switch,” he whispered, “wasn’t the morning track.”

The squirrel conductor skidded up with a lantern made from a dewdrop. Milo hugged the bark map to his chest, cheeks hot, because he had nodded when Ember tugged the lever. Ember stepped forward anyway. “I pulled it wrong,” he said softly. “Milo trusted me, and the mice are waiting.”

No one scolded. The conductor only tapped the map where a line of pale sap dots crossed a tiny knot-hole. Milo breathed out and noticed the same pale dots glowing above the left-hand rail. “The bark map isn’t just lines,” he said. “It matches what the tree is showing us.”

Milo climbed to the little switch bridge while Ember ran below, matching the glowing dots with his nose. “Ready?” Milo called. Ember flicked his tail once for yes. Together they eased the lever back, and the rails clicked with a gentle wooden clack, not a crash.

Far down the tunnel, the breakfast cart slowed, shivered, and rolled onto the mouse-burrow track. A warm smell of toasted seeds drifted back, and Milo’s shoulders loosened. Ember pressed his star pendant between his paws. “I still feel wobbly,” he said. Milo smiled. “Me too. But we’re helping it right.”

At the fork, the bark map curled like a sleepy leaf, and Milo saw the tiny notch he had missed. His cheeks warmed. “I moved the breakfast switch wrong,” he told the squirrel conductor. “I’m sorry. Can I help make it right?”

No one scolded. The conductor handed Milo a smooth seed-lantern, and Ember pressed his nose to the bark grooves. Together they traced the raised river-line, the mushroom mark, and the little mouse-door shape until the safer breakfast route gleamed ahead.

Milo tugged the switch back with both hands, and Ember gave the signal bell one bright tap with his paw. Click-click, the acorn train rolled from the wrong tunnel into the golden one. The porridge pots stopped wobbling, and the berry baskets settled with soft plunks.

The train puffed into a station tucked behind a curtain of moss, where tree mice waited in acorn-cap slippers. Milo carried the first basket down himself. “I made us late,” he said, “but we brought it warm.” The smallest mouse smiled with berry-purple whiskers.

After breakfast, the mice gave Milo and Ember two chestnut crumbs wrapped in a leaf for the ride home. Milo tucked the bark map carefully into his backpack, not to hide the mistake, but to remember how they fixed it. Ember leaned against him, warm as a little sunset.
