The Castle Before the Thunder

Milo took one careful step down, then another, and Ember followed so close their shadows touched. In the courtyard, a grown-up keeper waved from the castle’s broad stone hall. “Good choice,” she called, and Milo felt his chest loosen as they hurried toward the sturdy doorway.

Rain began as tiny dark freckles on the castle stones, then hurried into shiny threads. Across the courtyard, the garden bridge glimmered over a rain-swollen pond, and Ember’s star pendant trembled. Milo took one step toward it, then stopped when the tallest willow bent and shivered.

“The map room is past the bridge,” Milo said, trying to sound brave. Ember pressed his small paws into the stones and shook his head, ears flat but eyes steady. Milo noticed the water licking higher at the pond steps and the willow reaching like a wet umbrella nobody should stand under.

A deep boom rolled over the hill, and Milo’s stomach jumped before his feet did. He crouched beside Ember under a stone arch, breathing in the dusty smell of old walls and warm lanterns. The arch did not flap or sway; it simply held, quiet and wide.

Castle-keeper Mara appeared with a hooded lantern, her boots splashing softly. “There you are, storm-watchers,” she said, not scolding, just relieved. Milo pointed toward the bridge and admitted, “I almost ran that way,” and the words felt heavier than his backpack until Mara nodded kindly.

Mara led them into the thick-walled guardroom where rain tapped the shutters like busy fingers. Milo set his backpack down, and Ember curled beside it, the star pendant glowing softly. They listened together, not trapped, not bored—just waiting until someone wiser than the thunder said the castle was ready again.

The storm bell hummed once, low and round, just as a silver flash lit the old oak by the fountain. Ember’s ears sprang up, but Milo caught his own eager step before it ran toward the sparkle. “Not there,” Milo said softly. “The castle is stronger than a tree.”

Together they trotted away from the fountain’s splashing rim and ducked beneath the thick stone archway. Rain began tapping the courtyard like a hundred tiny drums. A guard in a blue cloak smiled from the doorway and said, “Good choosing, brave ones. Come in where it’s dry.”

Inside, the castle’s small storm room smelled of warm bread and candle wax. Milo helped Ember shake raindrops onto a mat, and Ember nudged a fallen toy crown back to a little dragon. Outside, thunder rolled like a cart over a bridge, but inside, everyone stayed together.

After a while, the thunder wandered farther and farther away. Milo pressed his nose near the window, but he did not open the door; Ember sat beside him, tail curled over his paws. At last, the guard lifted a green lantern and nodded. “All clear now.”

The castle shone as if the rain had polished every stone. Milo and Ember stepped outside with the guard, far from the oak and the fountain, and watched a rainbow bend over the towers. Milo squeezed Ember’s soft paw. “We waited,” he whispered, and Ember’s star pendant glimmered like a tiny yes.
