The Celery Rocket Greenhouse

The hatch popped open, and a tumble of mixed leaves fluttered over Milo’s sneakers and Ember’s paws. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Milo took one slow breath and opened his backpack. “We can fix this,” he said. “But not by rushing again.”

The celery rocket gave a hopeful hiccup, then shuddered so hard the tomato planets bobbled on their vines. A swirl of loose lettuce leaves whooshed up like green feathers and scattered across three garden bays. Milo hugged his backpack to his chest. “Oh no,” he whispered, “we rushed the fuel.”

Ember’s ears drooped until his star pendant touched his cream chest. “I grabbed the sparkly leaves because they looked fastest,” he said. Milo’s cheeks felt hot because he had cheered instead of checking. The rocket sighed out a puff of celery-sweet steam, not angry at all—just waiting.

Milo took one slow breath, the kind his bà ngoại used before stirring soup. He spread the mixed leaves on a smooth stepping stone and noticed something new: comet lettuce curled like tiny tails, rocket celery had crisp silver veins, and picnic garnish was soft and round. “We can sort what we see,” he said.

They worked side by side, not quickly, but kindly. Ember nudged the curly comet leaves back to the lettuce vine, and Milo tucked the silver-veined fuel leaves into the celery rocket’s basket. When Milo found a picnic leaf in the wrong pile, he smiled and moved it without scolding himself.

At last, the greenhouse stopped rustling and seemed to listen. Milo pointed from the rocket basket to the picnic bundle, then up through the glass roof where the little moon waited like a dumpling. Ember tapped his pendant once. This time, they would choose, check, and launch together.

Milo’s hand hovered over the shiny booster vine, but he did not grab it. He looked at Ember, then at the mixed-up leaves waiting in little green piles. “We rushed once,” Milo said softly. “This time, we count what the rocket needs before we touch anything.”

Ember nudged one curly leaf toward the lettuce comet vine, then paused to check the shape against the others. Milo matched the crisp celery leaves by their long ribs, and the greenhouse seemed to breathe easier. When the last tomato leaf returned to its planet stem, a tiny bell-flower chimed.

The rocket’s leafy nose twitched as Milo chose the pale celery star fuel, not the sparkly tomato drops that had tempted him before. Ember held the little fuel cup steady with both paws. “Ready because we planned,” he said, and Milo’s grin came back bright as morning.

With a gentle whoosh, the celery rocket lifted through a skylight of stars and sailed past the tomato planets. Milo and Ember held their picnic basket between them, laughing when a lettuce comet swished by like a green ribbon. The picnic moon rose ahead, round and soft and waiting.

On the picnic moon, Milo spread the blanket while Ember placed celery sticks in a careful little sunburst. Far below, the greenhouse twinkled, every leaf back where it belonged. Milo leaned shoulder to shoulder with Ember and whispered, “Next adventure, we plan first.”
