The Comet Library

The books settled with tiny thumps, and Milo stroked a cover back into place. “I was grabbing answers,” he said, cheeks warm. Ember nudged the first book, then the second, lining them side by side so their pictures could be compared.

A silvery wind slipped through the shelves and lifted every open book at once. Pages fluttered like startled birds, and the path behind Milo and Ember folded into a spiral of light. Milo hugged his backpack to his chest. “What if we read the wrong thing and get the comet lost?”

Ember pounced after the guidebook they had trusted, but another blue-covered book bumped gently against Milo’s knee. Its picture showed the comet turning away from a moon garden, not toward it. Milo frowned, then whispered, “Two books can’t both be the whole answer.”

They laid the books side by side on a smooth patch of comet stone. Ember tapped a painted tail of sparks in one picture, then Milo found the same curve glowing faintly beneath their sneakers. The clue was not in a sentence at all; it was under their feet.

Milo’s cheeks grew hot. “I wanted to be the kind of explorer who knows fast,” he admitted. Ember leaned his warm shoulder against Milo’s leg, and the star pendant chimed softly. Milo breathed out and turned the page slowly, as if giving the book time to breathe too.

The next picture showed no treasure room, only a small round door with three star-shaped shadows. Milo compared the shadows to Ember’s pendant, the floor curve, and the moon garden drawing. When all three matched, the door opened—not to an answer, but to a darker tunnel humming with a new question.

The bright index-moth fluttered toward the biggest shining door, and Ember bounced after it. Milo stopped with one sneaker on the comet-glass floor. “That clue is loud,” he said softly, “but our other clues were quiet. Can we check them together before we choose?”

They spread their finds on a moonstone table: a cold sparkle from the tail room, a warm crumb from the kitchen shelf, and Ember’s star pendant, humming faintly. Ember’s ears tipped forward. “Not one clue bossing us,” he whispered. “All of them talking together.”

When Milo placed the cold sparkle beside the warm crumb, the table glowed like sunrise on snow. A small book lifted itself open, showing a picture of the comet’s heart—not an ending, but a question mark made of light. Milo grinned. “It wants to know why it moves.”

They read the picture carefully, then carried the crumb to the comet’s sleeping heart and set the cold sparkle beside it. The library sighed, slow and happy, and turned its glowing tail toward Earth. Ember pressed close to Milo’s knee. The adventure was listening back.

At home, moonlight silvered Milo’s bedspread while Ember curled beside the backpack, tail over nose. The library book had become one tiny blank page in Milo’s pocket. He did not feel finished. He felt full of tomorrow.
