The Encore on the Moon

Milo sat beside Ember instead of standing alone. “Maybe just the chorus,” he said, and Ember nodded as if that were a brave plan, because it was. Together they sang the smallest piece of the song, and the crater lights warmed from silver to honey.

Just as the Moonbell Theatre filled with crater families, the silver curtain shivered and all the footlights winked out. A hush rolled over the seats like a soft blanket. Milo felt his song shrink inside him, and Ember’s pendant glowed against his worried chest.

Behind a painted moon-rock, Milo pressed both hands to his tummy. “I practised when it was just us,” he whispered, “but now my knees feel fizzy.” Ember leaned his warm shoulder into Milo’s leg and said, “Fizzy knees can still take one small step.”

They could have hidden until someone else began. Instead, Milo opened his backpack and found the three smooth moon pebbles they had used during practice. He tapped them once, twice, three times, and Ember padded the same rhythm in a tiny circle, just for him.

When the pebble rhythm reached the stage floor, the old moon panels answered with a pale blue glow. Not enough for a grand entrance, but enough to see each other’s faces. A little crater girl in the front row clapped softly, and Milo’s breath found room again.

Milo stepped only to the pebble nearest the audience, not all the way to the bright center. “Good evening, Moonbell,” he said, his voice small but real. Ember flicked his cream-tipped tail like a tiny banner, and the room listened as if small could be wonderful.

The curtains breathed like silver waves, and the whole moon theatre waited. Milo’s knees still felt fizzy, but he looked at Ember, then at the tiny practice circle of crater children smiling from the front row. “Let’s begin small,” Milo whispered, and Ember’s pendant gave one brave little flash.

Milo tapped the first moon-bell with just one finger. Ember answered with a careful paw-step, and the sound floated out soft and clear, not perfect, but true. A crater child copied the rhythm from her seat, and soon the front row was gently helping the song grow.

Halfway through, Milo missed a note, and his cheeks warmed brighter than moon peaches. For a blink, he almost stepped back into the curtain. Ember nudged his sneaker and said, “Again is part of the song,” so Milo took a breath and found the next note waiting.

This time, Milo did not rush the bright part. He played it slowly, with Ember’s tail swishing beside the beat, and the crater villages hummed along until the theatre glowed from floor to dome. When the final note rose, it became a shower of tiny silver blossoms.

After the cheers faded into a cozy hush, Milo and Ember sat on the stage steps with moon-dust shining on their toes. Milo held one silver blossom in his palm and smiled. He still felt a few butterflies inside, but now they fluttered like friends showing him the way.
