The Kite Ferry Across Lullaby Lagoon

At last they pushed away from Mooncomb Dock, gliding three boat-lengths into Lullaby Lagoon. Then the great kite above them drooped like a tired butterfly. Milo’s foot tapped once, twice—until Ember pressed his warm shoulder against Milo’s knee and watched the still water with him.

Halfway across Lullaby Lagoon, the ferry’s bright kite sagged like a sleepy flower. The boat slowed until the silver water only whispered against its shell hull. Milo hugged his burnt-orange backpack and stared at the far island, where tiny picnic lanterns were already beginning to glow.

“If we miss Cousin Linh’s first song, it won’t come back,” Milo said, his voice small and squeezed. Ember’s ears tipped low, and his tail flicked too fast. Around them, grown-ups loosened bundles, babies napped, and nobody seemed to be making the wind hurry.

Then the ferry captain pointed upward. The kite tails from three ferries had twisted together, making one bright knot that held the little wind still. Milo’s cheeks warmed; he had been watching the island so hard, he had not noticed the problem right above them.

Milo wanted to yank the nearest ribbon free, but Ember pressed one soft paw on his sneaker. So Milo breathed in with the lagoon’s hush and waited for the captain’s nod. Together they passed one loop under, one loop over, moving slowly enough for the knot to remember how to open.

When the last ribbon slipped loose, a small breeze came running across the lagoon. Two ferries reached for the same blue-and-gold tail, and Milo felt hurry jump inside him again. This time he said, “Let’s share it first,” and Ember’s pendant flashed like a tiny yes.

At last, the wind bell gave one tiny ring, and the ferry captain brought out a basket of kite tails. Milo reached for the bright dragon tail, while Ember patted a swishy fox-red one. They looked at the crowded ferry, then at each other, and Milo smiled. “What if we choose the long rainbow tail for everyone?”

The rainbow tail was wider than Milo’s arms and softer than a blanket. Ember held one end in his small dark paws while Milo clipped the middle where the captain pointed. When the ferry lifted, all the kites leaned together like friends sharing a secret.

The wind returned slowly, not with a whoosh, but with a gentle shoulder-push. Milo felt how waiting had made the first glide sweeter. Ember tipped his nose into the breeze, and the lagoon answered with silver ripples that sounded almost like cousin Mai’s song.

The cousin’s island came close, all lantern-fruit trees and picnic blankets spread like little moons. Mai waved from the shell dock with both hands, her singing scarf fluttering. Milo did not leap before the ferry settled; he waited for the captain’s nod, then ran into the happiest hug.

Later, Milo sat between Ember and Mai while the islands hummed the last gold out of the sky. The shared rainbow tail rested beside the picnic basket, sandy at the edges and beautiful from helping. Milo leaned against Ember’s warm fur and whispered, “Slow trips can still arrive.”
