The Lantern Dunes Parade

For a breath, no one moved. The dunes kept humming, softer now, like they were waiting too. Milo crouched beside Ember and brushed sand from one small paw. “I wanted to lead,” Milo said. Ember nodded. “Me too. Maybe the lanterns need us one at a time.”

At the tallest dune, all three family lanterns began humming at once, tugging in three different directions. Milo hurried after the blue one, while Ember bounded toward the gold, and the rose lantern spun between them like a dizzy moon. The sand under their feet sang a wobbly note.

“I can fix it fast!” Ember cried, paws skittering over the shining sand. He darted ahead before Milo could answer, and the three lanterns flashed in a tangled order—gold, rose, blue, gold—until their gentle hum turned bumpy. Milo’s chest felt tight, not angry exactly, but left behind.

Milo planted his sneakers in the sand and held up one hand. “Ember, wait. When you zoom, I don’t know when it’s my turn.” Ember’s ears drooped, and the lanterns dimmed to a soft peach glow, as if the dunes were listening too.

Ember looked at Milo’s shoes, then at his own sandy paws. “I wanted to be helpful,” he said softly. Milo nodded, and together they noticed something new: the lanterns brightened whenever one leader walked and the other followed close enough to hear the hum change.

Milo led the blue lantern over the first glassy ridge while Ember padded beside him, whisper-counting the hums with his tail. Then Milo stepped back, and Ember guided the gold lantern in a careful curve. The rose lantern steadied between them, glowing like it was smiling.

At the last tall dune, all three lanterns tugged forward at once, tangling their colors into a fizzy green blur. Milo reached out first, then pulled his hand back. “Ember, you saw the pattern from behind. Will you lead this part?”

Ember’s ears perked, but he did not dash. He stepped slowly along the ridge, tapping one paw, then waiting while the nearest family lantern answered with a soft hum. Milo walked just behind him, matching his pace even when his sneakers itched to hurry.

When Ember stopped, Milo noticed the smallest lantern had fallen shy and dim. “My turn to help that one?” he whispered. Ember nodded, and Milo guided it with two careful steps, letting the other lanterns wait instead of pulling them along.

The mixed-up glow loosened into three clear colors, circling like ribbons around Milo and Ember. Families on the far side of the dune lifted their hands, and the lanterns hummed in a tune that sounded like thank you. Milo grinned at Ember. “We led better when we shared it.”

At the quiet basin beyond the dunes, the three family lanterns settled above the sand like sleepy moons. Milo sat shoulder to shoulder with Ember, and neither of them needed the next turn right away. Together, they watched the whole desert glow.
