The Rainbow Road Race

The goat racer trotted back instead of boasting. “Violet Bend likes gentle feet,” she said, tapping the road so it purred under her hooves. Milo crouched and placed one palm on the glowing stripe. The hum was slower than his heartbeat, and he began to understand.

The violet stripe curved around a cliff of sparkling ice, smoother than Milo expected. His blue sneaker slipped, and the little cloud-sled they had been riding spun sideways with a squeaky shiver. Ember leaped close, tail puffed, while two racers zipped past in a blur of silver bells.

Milo stood up slowly and brushed rainbow frost from his shorts, but his smile had gone small. The finish flags glittered far ahead, and the leading racers looked tinier every second. “I wanted to be brave and fast,” he whispered, “not brave and last.”

Ember sniffed the icy stripe, then tapped a dark patch where the violet looked almost blue. Milo crouched and noticed tiny pebble-stars frozen into the road, making little bumps like hidden raisins in rice. If they pushed hard there, they would wobble again.

Milo took one long breath, the kind his grandmother used before pouring soup without spilling. “We can’t catch everyone,” he said, “but we can race better than we did.” He and Ember guided the cloud-sled along the sunny edge, slow at first, then smooth as a kite string.

By the time Milo and Ember reached the next arch, a striped comet cat had already crossed it first, skidding into a happy tumble. Milo’s chest pinched, then loosened when the cat looked back, beaming. He lifted both hands and called, “That was amazing!”

Milo watched Luma’s comet-cart flash ahead toward the finish arch, and his chest felt tight as a knotted shoelace. Ember’s ears drooped beside him. Then Milo took one slow breath and said, “I wanted to win, but I don’t want to be mean about losing.”

The finish arch burst into ribbons of light as Luma crossed first. For a moment, Milo’s hands stayed at his sides. Then Ember bumped his knee, and together they raised their arms and called, “Great race, Luma!” The words felt wobbly, but true.

Luma rolled back instead of racing away, her cheeks bright from the wind. “You two helped me on the spiral bridge,” she said. Milo looked at the rainbow track behind them and noticed where he had sped up too early, and where Ember had warned, “Careful,” but he had not listened.

“Next time,” Milo said, “I’ll save my zoom for the last hill.” Ember flicked his cream-tipped tail. “And I’ll squeak louder when the road wiggles.” Luma laughed and invited them on a slow victory lap, not to decide a winner, but to see the whole planet sparkle.

At sunset, the rainbow road curled softly around the mountain planet like a ribbon put away with care. Milo sat with Ember against his backpack, watching Luma’s winner star twinkle above the arch. His heart still felt a little sore, but it also felt bigger.
