The Umbrella Village Above the Rain

The house settled with a squeaky sigh, no longer pointing at the rainbow dock. Milo and Ember stared at the handle, now bent like a tired noodle. Ember’s ears drooped. Milo took a breath and said softly, “We can fix it together—after we decide turns together.”

Just as the next umbrella-house bobbed toward the rainbow dock, the warm rain began to slant sideways. Three homes spun in different directions, their handles knocking softly like cups in a sink. Milo gripped the steering tassel, and Ember’s ears flattened as the village drifted farther from the glowing dock.

“I can fix it if I steer longer,” Milo said, leaning forward with both hands. Ember gave a small hurt yip and pulled his paws back from the handle. Milo heard it under the rain and felt his cheeks grow hot; he had taken Ember’s turn without even looking.

Milo loosened his fingers. “I was scared we’d miss the dock,” he said. Ember nudged the handle, then pointed his nose toward the swaying houses; when they watched together, Milo noticed each umbrella dipped after a raindrop gust, not before. Waiting one breath made steering easier.

On the next gust, they tried their new rhythm: Ember watched the rain, Milo steered after the dip. But a lavender umbrella-house bumped a silver one, and its handle bent with a sad little twang. The house tilted, not dangerously, but enough to make its flowerpots slide.

Milo’s first thought was to grab and yank, but he stopped when Ember placed one careful paw over his hand. Together they wrapped Milo’s scarf around the bend and pulled slowly—one breath, one tug, one breath again. The handle straightened enough to steer, and Ember’s tail wagged like a tiny flag.

Only one umbrella-house remained, wobbling at the edge of the warm rain. Milo touched the steering handle, then looked at Ember’s eager paws. “You watched the wind better than I did,” he said softly. “You steer first, and I’ll be your steady hands.”

Ember steered carefully, ears tipped toward the breeze, while Milo counted the soft gusts with his fingers. A sudden puff nudged them sideways, and the handle bent with a quiet twang. Ember froze. Milo’s smile flickered, but he did not grab it back.

“I’m sorry,” Ember whispered. Milo knelt beside him, shoulder to shoulder in the golden drizzle. “It happened to both of us,” Milo said. Together they wrapped the bent handle with Ember’s pendant cord and a ribbon from Milo’s backpack until it curved strong again.

When the handle was ready, Milo placed his hands below Ember’s paws. Ember guided the first gentle turn, and Milo guided the next, their movements slow as a lullaby. The umbrella-house sighed into line and floated toward the rainbow dock with all the others.

At the dock, the umbrella villagers waved from their bright round doorways as rain shimmered far below. Milo and Ember sat side by side on the rainbow edge, sharing the last warm biscuit from the backpack. Neither needed the first turn now; the best part had been making room.
