The Greenhouse Where Echoes Bloomed

Lumi lifted her hand from the tile and looked closely. The orchid’s blue petals were pinched inward exactly where Pip’s yip had sounded sharp, as if the words had left tiny dents. Pip crouched beside her, nose nearly touching the bud, and his whiskers trembled.

“Look,” Lumi said, not loudly, but truly. She pointed to the curled places, then to the flattened daisies by her boot. Pip whispered, “They heard me.” A fern behind him made one small shiver, and every leaf in the greenhouse seemed to wait for what came next.

Pip sprang up, eager to fix everything at once. “Dear flower, you are the bluest, velvetiest, most wonderful bud in the sky!” he sang, bowing so low his ears brushed the pot. The orchid gave one cautious wiggle, then stayed shut; Lumi’s shoulders stayed small.

Lumi took a breath that shook at the edges. “Maybe it doesn’t need fancy words,” she said. “Maybe it needs the true ones first.” Pip’s tail stopped fizzing. He turned from the orchid to Lumi, and for once he did not jump into the silence.

But when Pip’s eyes grew shiny, Lumi nearly tucked the hurt away again. “It was nothing,” she began, and the orchid tightened until it looked like a blue pebble. A silver lily beside Pip dipped so low its rim kissed the water. Lumi heard her own thin voice and stopped.

Lumi knelt until she and Pip were eye to eye over the pot. She touched one curled petal with the tip of one finger. “When you called me Mud-Moon Boots, my cheeks got hot,” she said. “I know you meant funny, but it hurt me.”

Pip did not yip this time. He sat down softly, as if the tile might be tender too. “I’m sorry, Lumi,” he said. “I made your boots the joke, and I didn’t look at your face. May I help clean them after we help the orchid?”

Lumi nodded, and the nod seemed to loosen the air. Together, she and Pip leaned close without crowding the flower. “You can open slowly,” Lumi whispered. “We will stay gentle,” Pip added. The orchid unfurled petal by petal, spilling green light like moonbeams made of leaves.

The evening glow rolled through the dome, turning every pane soft gold. Pip fetched a moss cloth and cleaned Lumi’s muddy boot in small careful circles. Lumi laughed once, a real laugh this time. “They do look a little moonish,” she said, and Pip smiled without sharpening it.

When the sunset bell finally rang, it did not clang. It bloomed. From the orchid’s center floated two tiny echo-blossoms, one shaped like Lumi’s brave breath, one like Pip’s sorry. They drifted up together and planted themselves in the glass, where tomorrow’s light would remember.
