   At the edge of Grandma’s lemongrass garden, a hill began to hum like a sleepy song. Milo stopped with one sneaker in the mud, and Ember’s golden star pendant gave a tiny wink of light. Beneath the ferns, a door-shaped crack glowed blue.

   Ember pressed his nose near the crack, then sneezed a puff of glittery dust. The stone slid open without a grumble, revealing steps made of crystal slices. “Only looking,” Milo whispered, though his backpack bounced as if it had already decided.

   Inside, the cave was not dark at all. Crystals hung like frozen raindrops, catching Milo’s breath and turning it pink, gold, and green. When Ember shivered, Milo noticed and slowed his steps until their shoulders brushed. The nearest crystal brightened like a lantern.

   Deeper in, a small clinking sound came from behind a curtain of purple stone. Milo lifted the curtain carefully. A pebble-dragon no bigger than his shoe sat with one wing tucked crookedly, blinking hard as if it did not want to cry.

   Ember sprang forward, but Milo held out a gentle hand. “Wait. Maybe it’s scared.” He crouched so his eyes were level with the pebble-dragon’s. “Do you want us close, or would you like space?” The cave grew quiet, listening for the answer.

   Beyond the glowing arch, Milo and Ember found a pool as still as a sleeping moon. Tiny crystal fish flickered beneath the surface, but one little fish stayed tucked under a stone, dim and gray. Ember leaned close, his star pendant swinging. “Maybe it wants to play,” he whispered.

   Milo scooped a bright pebble from the path and plopped it near the hiding fish. “Look! A present!” The pebble made a loud plunk, and ripples bumped the little fish’s stone. In an instant, the pool’s blue glow faded to a worried purple.

   Milo’s cheeks warmed. “I tried to help, but I made it worse.” Ember touched the water with one careful paw and watched the fish tuck itself smaller. “Maybe it didn’t need a present,” he said softly. “Maybe it needed quiet.”

   Milo lay on his belly, leaving plenty of space between his nose and the pool. “Little fish,” he murmured, “would you like us to move the pebble away?” For a moment nothing happened. Then the fish gave one tiny flash, like a shy yes.

10. 10

    Milo used two fingers to lift the bright pebble out, slow as sunrise. Ember pushed a soft leaf to the pool’s edge, where it made a little shadowy roof. The fish slipped out, silver again, and the cave answered with a gentle golden glow.
