The Cloud Bakery Expedition

The bumped bun burst into a snowfall of floury feathers, dusting Milo’s hair and Ember’s ears. For one breath, nobody moved. Then Milo sneezed, Ember blinked two white eyelashes, and the baker laughed kindly. “A brave first batch,” she said, “and now we learn the cloud way.”

Just as Milo patted the last moon-bun smooth, a warm gust puffed from the oven vents. The unbaked loaves bobbed upward, bumping the rafters like sleepy balloons. Ember’s ears dipped. “Did we make them too happy?”

Milo reached without thinking, but the baker’s long cloud-mitt gently blocked his hand. Heat shimmered around the silver peel. Milo’s cheeks warmed—not from the oven this time. He stepped behind the blue tile line and whispered, “I forgot.”

The baker smiled as if mistakes were simply crumbs to sweep up. “Helpers can still help,” she said. Milo washed his hands again at the little rain-sink, and Ember scrubbed his paws until bubbles clung to his whiskers. Together, they listened before they moved.

From the safe side of the line, Milo tossed soft cooling ribbons while the baker steered the hot peel. Ember darted under the floating buns, tying gentle knots with his quick little paws. The loaves stopped drifting and swayed in a neat, buttery parade.

Milo watched the baker slide the first rescued loaf onto a cooling cloud, and he did not step closer. That felt hard—and good. Ember leaned against his leg, pendant twinkling. Milo grinned. “Teamwork means knowing where my feet belong.”

The cloud oven gave a golden sigh, and the biggest balloon-loaf bobbed toward its glowing door. Milo’s fingers twitched to help, but he remembered the Baker’s careful face. “We should call her,” he whispered, and Ember nodded so hard his star pendant bounced.

The Cloud Baker swept over with mitts as puffy as moon pillows and a paddle longer than Milo was tall. Milo held the ribbon guide from the marked safe spot, while Ember counted the loaf’s gentle swings. Together, they helped without rushing into the heat.

The loaf drifted down onto the cooling cloud with a pleased little poof. Ember lifted one paw, then tucked it back before touching. Milo grinned and said, “We wait until it’s ready for hands,” and the Baker’s eyes shone like warm sugar.

When the loaves cooled, the Baker broke one open and honey-scented clouds rolled out. Milo shared the first soft piece with Ember, then carried a basket to the waiting sky-neighbors. Every bun felt lighter because everyone had helped keep the bakery safe.

At dusk, a tiny crumb-cloud carried Milo and Ember back past the glowing bakery windows. Milo rested his hand beside Ember’s warm fur, not on the cooling pan between them. The city twinkled below, and the adventure tasted like courage, kindness, and home.
