The Telescope on Pillow Cloud Peak

A bell-chime voice drifted from the ceiling, and a soft cloud bird with spectacles folded itself into view. “Lost a star, have we?” it asked kindly. Ember tucked close to Milo, then lifted his nose. “Could we ask one question before we try again?”

Milo gasped when a silver spark flashed in the telescope. “There! The morning star!” Ember bounced so hard his pendant tapped the brass leg, but the spark slid sideways and became a dewdrop rolling along a wind chime. Milo’s smile folded small at the edges.

While Milo rubbed the telescope glass with his sleeve, the observatory drifted into a herd of puffy clouds. One cloud looked like a fox, then a boat, then a sleeping bun. Ember’s ears drooped. “If everything changes, how do we choose?”

The sky guide, a tall crane made of mist and moon-gold feathers, landed without a sound. Milo wanted to ask everything at once, but he breathed in the cool cloud air. “Which cloud shape should we check first?” he asked, and the crane’s eyes warmed.

The crane pointed its beak toward three clouds stacked like pillows. “The shy one peeks from the dip, not the tallest puff.” Milo compared the shapes again, slower this time, and saw a tiny dark notch where the clouds tucked together like folded blankets.

Milo loosened the telescope knob just a little, and Ember steadied the wobbly stand with both front paws. The view slid past the tallest puff and settled into the quiet dip. There, faint as a whispered bell, a small pearly light blinked once.

The bright speck in the telescope twinkled proudly, and Milo’s hand flew up to ring the brass victory bell. Ember caught his sleeve with one soft paw. “Wait,” the fox cub whispered. “It looks rounder than the cloud shape the guide showed us.”

Milo lowered his arm and looked from the sky map of clouds to the sleepy glow beyond the lens. “Sky Guide,” he asked, “does the shy morning star sit above the feather cloud or beside it?” The guide’s wind-chime voice answered, “Beside it, where the cloud curls like a fox tail.”

Ember climbed onto the padded footstool while Milo steadied the telescope’s cool brass side. They turned it slowly, not too far, then a tiny bit back. The wrong sparkle slid away, and a softer light peeked from beside the curled cloud.

There it was—not the loudest shine, but the gentlest, blinking like it was happy to be found. Milo grinned so widely his cheeks rounded, and Ember’s tail puffed with pride. This time, they rang the bell together, one careful note floating across the morning.

As the observatory drifted toward a new sunrise, Milo tucked a cloud-soft feather into his backpack, and Ember leaned against his knee. They watched the shy star fade safely into morning. Milo whispered, “I’m glad we checked,” and Ember’s pendant glowed once, like a tiny yes.
