Captain Octopus’s Safety Check

Captain Octopus glided out with a calm wave, and the submarine’s soft helper arms steadied Milo’s bubble. Nothing was broken, but Milo’s cheeks warmed. “I skipped the check,” he said. Ember pressed his paws together and whispered, “Can we start again, Captain?”

Beyond the kelp forest, the pearl cave opened like a moonlit mouth. Ember bounced on his paws, but the submarine gave a sudden shudder, and three silver shells outside began to turn in different directions. Captain Octopus’s smile softened. “The cave likes things done in order.”

A pearly lever gleamed beside Ember, exactly at fox-cub height. Before Milo could ask, Ember nudged it with his nose, and the cave lights blinked sleepy purple. The submarine tilted just enough to roll Milo’s backpack against his ankle. Ember’s ears drooped. “I only wanted to help.”

Milo’s cheeks felt hot, because he had been thinking about the treasure too. “I didn’t remind him to wait,” he said, rubbing his sneaker on the floor. Captain Octopus nodded, not cross at all. “A good crew repairs the moment together. First, we pause and listen.”

They tried again, slowly enough to notice. Milo watched Captain Octopus tap the air gauges before the steering pearl, and Ember checked that his pendant cord was tucked away from the levers. When Milo copied the order, the submarine stopped tilting, as if it had taken a deep breath.

One by one, the silver shells outside folded open, scattering bubbles like tiny bells. Ember pressed close to Milo, not rushing this time, and Milo grinned at him. The pearl gate welcomed them into a cavern bright with treasure—but the proudest sparkle was Ember’s careful smile.

Beyond the pearl caves, a silver current twirled straight toward the glowing treasure bell. Ember’s paws bounced with excitement, but Milo noticed Captain Octopus resting one careful tentacle on the lever. “Wait,” Milo said softly. “We promised to hear the whole sequence first.”

Captain Octopus smiled so wide his cheeks made bubbles. Milo checked the window seal until the green glow blinked steady, and Ember tugged once on the safety line, then nodded. Only after each little sign was ready did the submarine hum forward.

The submarine slipped through the silver current as smoothly as a spoon through soup. At the cave’s heart, Ember tapped the pearl bell, and a note rang warm and round through the water. Tiny lantern fish whirled up, making a crown of light around them.

On the way back, Captain Octopus lowered his sailor cap to Milo and Ember. “Brave is good,” he said, “but brave with checking brings everyone home.” Milo felt his backpack settle against his shoulders, not heavy at all, but proud.

That evening, Milo and Ember sat on the dock with their toes and paws tucked close, watching the sea blink with moonlit ripples. Ember’s star pendant shone like a tiny lighthouse. Milo whispered, “Next adventure, we check first,” and Ember leaned against him, smiling.
