Remy Learns the Medicine Rule

Remy squeezed the cloth into the sink. “If I see a bottle, I stop,” he said slowly. “I keep my paws away. I tell a trusted adult.” Mama smiled. “That is the medicine rule.” Remy nodded to his stuffed fox. “Did you hear that, little one? We ask first.”

In the kitchen, rain tapped the window like soft fingers. Remy climbed onto his chair for apple slices. Mama stirred soup at the stove. On the table sat a small cup of water and Papa’s closed pill box, waiting beside his napkin. Remy looked at the bright blue lid.

The box was not on a high shelf. It was right there. Remy’s paw lifted before his words were ready. He wanted to slide it closer and see if it rattled. His claw touched the smooth lid. Then his stuffed fox bumped his elbow and flopped onto the table.

Remy froze. The medicine rule came back in Mama’s voice. Stop. Paws away. Tell a trusted adult. He pulled both paws into his hoodie pocket. “Mama,” he called, a little wobbly, “I almost touched Papa’s medicine box. I stopped.” The soup spoon paused with a soft clink.

Mama came over and stood between Remy and the table. “Thank you for telling me,” she said. “Papa’s medicine is for Papa, with an adult checking.” She picked up the box and set it on the high counter, far back by the fruit bowl. Remy let out a long breath.

When Papa came in, Mama handed him the box. “I left it too close to small paws,” Papa said. “Thank you, Remy.” Together, the grown-ups put it in the locked cabinet after Papa was done. Remy carried plates to the table. His safe job felt as bright as the apple slices.

After dinner, the rain slowed to tiny taps. Remy washed sticky apple from his paws. “Mama,” he asked, “what if I find medicine when you are not right there?” Mama dried a bowl. “Good question, little one. You do the same rule. Stop. Paws away. Tell a trusted adult.”

Mama set an empty spice jar on the counter, with the lid closed tight. “Let’s pretend this is an unknown bottle,” she said. Remy reached toward it, then stopped. “Oops. I was going to pick it up.” He stepped back until his tail brushed the chair. “Mama, I found a bottle.”

“That was safer,” Mama said. She picked up the empty jar. “A trusted adult can check it.” Remy nodded. The jar smelled faintly of cinnamon, warm and sharp. It was not medicine today, but his paws still stayed down. “I can tell before I touch,” he said, a little louder.

Papa clicked the cabinet lock and tested the handle. It stayed shut. “Medicine lives here after an adult uses it,” he said. Remy listened to the small click. It sounded like a seat belt for the shelf. He put his stuffed fox into his backpack. “Fox can learn the rule too.”

At bedtime, the house smelled like soup and clean towels. Remy snuggled under his quilt. “What is the medicine rule?” Mama whispered. Remy held up one paw, then tucked it under the blanket. “I never taste or take medicine alone. I tell a trusted adult first.” “That’s right, little one,” Mama said.
