Mina Checks the Tomorrow List

Mina touched the zipper. It moved a little, then stopped. A glue stick was lying sideways in the pocket, round and sneaky. Mina laughed softly. “Final check, please, little one style,” she said. Mama looked with her, not for mistakes, just for tomorrow. Together they moved the glue stick into the art pouch.

Mina spotted a smooth gray pebble from the park. It sat beside her pencil case, cool and round. “For thinking,” she said, dropping it into the front pocket. Clunk. The backpack gave a small heavy sag. Mina touched the tomorrow list. There was reading, art, lunch, and rain. No pebble picture.

She took the pebble out and made it a tiny bed on the windowsill. The glass felt cool under her fingers. “You can think here,” Mina whispered. The backpack sat taller. Mama smiled. “Some things stay home so school things have room.” Mina nodded and looked at the next small picture.

The last picture showed pencils. Mina opened the front pocket. Out came one pencil, then a tiny eraser, then a pencil with no point. They rolled like sleepy logs. “Too many little pieces,” Mina said. She found the pencil case and slid in two sharpened pencils and the eraser. Zip. Neat.

Mina put one finger on each picture. Reading book, art folder, lunch box, pencil case. Her finger stopped at rain. “Coat by the door,” she said. Then she looked inside the bag, not fast, not slow. The folder was flat. The lunch box was low. The book peeked from the side.

Beside the bag sat the scarf, the extra blue book, and three crayons Mina had not needed. The table looked less crowded now. Mina pushed the zipper around the corner. This time it slid with a soft shhh. She patted the navy backpack. “Not everything,” she said. “Just tomorrow.”

Mina carried the navy backpack to Mama’s chair. It bumped softly against her knee. “Final check, please,” she said. Mama pulled the tomorrow list close. “Good asking, little one.” Together they opened the bag. Mina felt a flutter. What if something was missing? The kitchen hummed quietly. The zipper waited like a small smile.

Mama did not empty the bag. She looked with Mina, picture by picture. Reading book. Art folder. Lunch box. Pencil case. Rain coat by the door. Then Mama tapped the list. “Where will your water bottle go?” Mina blinked. The bottle still stood by the sink, shining with tiny drops. “Oh,” Mina said. “It was drying.”

Mina fetched the bottle with both hands. It felt cool and a little slippery. She tried to push it on top of the book. The book tipped up like a tent. Mina stopped. “That squashes things,” she said. She slid the bottle into the side pocket instead. Snug. The book lay flat again.

Mama gave one slow nod. “That is tomorrow.” Mina zipped the bag and carried it to the door. The rain coat hung on its hook, sleeve dangling like it wanted a handshake. Mina tucked one cuff inside the other. Backpack below, coat above. Her shoulders felt loose. The table had room for bedtime tea.

In the morning, Mina touched the backpack, then the coat. “Reading, art, lunch, pencils, water, rain,” she whispered. Nothing poked. Nothing sagged. Mama smiled. “You checked your tomorrow list.” Mina grinned at little one in the shiny door reflection. “Not everything,” she said. “Just today’s tomorrow.”
