    The first firefly blinked above Bao’s garden gate like a tiny lantern deciding where to go. Then a hundred more floated up, joining glow to glow until a golden path curled in the air. Sao’s star pendant shimmered, and his tail began to wag.

    Bao opened the gate, and the map drifted forward as if it had been waiting just for them. Beyond the yard, the forest glowed silver-blue under the moon. “Do you think it knows a secret?” Bao whispered. Sao gave one bright yip, which meant yes and hurry.

    Inside the trees, the firefly map changed shape with every step. It drew a bridge, erased it, then painted three shining dots beside a fern. Bao laughed, but the forest answered with a low rustle, and his fingers found the strap of his backpack.

    A bush beside the path shook once, twice, and threw a huge crooked shadow across the leaves. Bao stopped so fast Sao bumped his sneaker. “That shadow looks like a giant,” Bao said, his voice small. Sao leaned warm against his leg instead of running ahead.

    A huge shape lifted behind the roots, tall as a house and crowned with twisting antlers. Sao’s tail puffed, and Bao felt his knees turn wobbly. “My scared feeling says it’s a monster,” Bao said, trying not to run, “but my eyes need more light.”
