The Moon Garden in Zero Gravity

Milo breathed in, counted one slow rocket-count, and touched the bulb only a little. This time, a single bead floated out and settled beside the seed. The moss shivered, not from fear, but as if it had finally been heard. Ember’s tail made a happy comet curl.

By the next glowing moon-hour, the tallest sprout had folded its silver leaves like tired hands. Milo’s smile slipped. “But we gave it sparkle-water,” he whispered, while Ember hovered close enough for his pendant to sway against the pale stem.

Milo reached for another floating bead of water, bigger than a plum, ready to push it toward the roots. Ember gently caught his sleeve with one dark paw. Around the bubble, tiny droplets were already crowding the soil, shining beautifully but leaving no room for air.

They did not add more. Milo pressed one ear near the bubble and watched instead: the roots were pale at the tips, but the leaves leaned toward a dusty window where moonlight came thin and blue. “Maybe it isn’t thirsty,” Milo said slowly. “Maybe it’s looking.”

Together they nudged the planter, not fast enough to slosh the roots, only a slow turn through the air. Ember brushed dust from the window with his tail tip, and Milo shaded the leaf that had curled too sharply. The garden grew quiet, as if listening back.

Nothing happened all at once. Milo’s toes drifted, Ember’s ears twitched, and they waited through one long, wobbly breath. Then the folded leaf loosened just a little, opening a green line so small that only patient friends would see it.

A whole cluster of moon-buds began to shiver, their silver skins puckering as if they wanted to burst open at once. Milo reached for the watering pearl, then stopped himself. “Maybe more isn’t kinder,” he whispered, and Ember’s ears tilted thoughtfully.

They drifted close without touching the vine. Milo noticed one side of the leaves curled away from the bright window, while the roots glowed faintly where the mist was thin. Ember gave the smallest yip, as if saying, Look first.

Milo nudged the vine’s cradle until it turned slowly out of the sharp moonbeam. Ember caught the drifting mist-bell with both front paws and let only three soft droplets float to the roots. The buds stopped shaking and seemed to sigh.

For a long moment, nothing happened. Milo felt the old fizz of wanting hurry rise in his chest, but he breathed it out beside Ember. Then, one by one, the buds opened into pale blue flowers that turned their faces toward them.

The observatory dimmed to a cozy dawn, and one fallen seedpod settled into Milo’s open palm, glowing like a tiny moon. “We’ll visit and wait,” Milo promised. Ember tucked his nose against Milo’s arm, and the garden floated peacefully around their friendship.
