  1. 1

Under the old fig tree, where the roots curled like sleeping dragons, Bao heard water singing. Sao’s ears popped up, and the golden star on his pendant glimmered. Between two mossy stones, a blue-green glow breathed in the dark, as if the forest were keeping a wonderful secret.

  2. 2

Bao ran to the picnic blanket where Grandpa Minh was pouring tea. “There’s a river under the tree!” Bao whispered, trying not to burst. Grandpa Minh lifted his lantern and smiled. “Then we will look together—slow feet, bright eyes, and nobody goes near the water without me.”

  3. 3

Grandpa Minh checked the stone steps first, tapping each one with his walking stick. Bao held the lantern handle with him, and Sao padded close enough for his tail to brush Bao’s sock. Down they went, into cool air that smelled of rain, roots, and moonlit leaves.

  4. 4

The tunnel opened into a cavern so wide that Bao forgot to blink. A silver river slid beneath a ceiling of glowing roots, and beside the shore waited a little wooden boat. Sao hopped forward, then stopped when Grandpa Minh’s gentle hand lowered. “First, we ask the river properly.”

  5. 5

Grandpa Minh opened his pack and brought out three small life vests: blue for Bao, red for himself, and a snug yellow one for Sao. Bao touched the boat’s rope but did not climb in. The river shone ahead, promising mystery, and Bao felt proud to wait.

  6. 6

The hidden river widened into a quiet pool, and there, tied to a root as thick as a dragon’s tail, bobbed a little wooden boat. Bao’s whole face brightened. Sao sniffed the air, and his star pendant winked gold in the blue-green glow.

  7. 7

Bao put one sneaker on the smooth dock stone, already imagining himself captain of the secret river. Then he noticed the water moving faster beyond the pool, curling around dark rocks like ribbons. He pulled his foot back and whispered, “We should wait for Cô Mai.”

  8. 8

Beside the boat, Sao found a reed basket tucked under a fern of silver moss. Inside were two small float vests, a coil of rope, and a smooth wooden paddle. Bao touched the vest buckles and smiled, proud that waiting had helped them notice what the boat needed.

  9. 9

When Cô Mai arrived with her lantern, she helped Bao fasten a vest snugly and looped a little safety rope to the dock root. “One gentle test,” she said. Bao stepped into the boat carefully, but the boat rocked hard enough to make his knees wobble.

  • 10

The boat bumped the root with a hollow thunk, and a cold splash jumped onto Bao’s shorts and Sao’s paws. Sao squeaked, then shook each paw like a tiny dancer. Bao laughed, but he stayed seated and held the sides until the rocking slowed.

  • 11

The hidden river, which had been whispering all morning, suddenly began to hurry. The little boat bumped the bank with a hollow thunk, and the glowing roots above flickered like lanterns in a breeze. Bao hugged his backpack straps and felt the happy fizz in his chest turn into a small knot.

  • 12

A silver seed-pod spun past the boat, bright as a moon button. Sao sprang forward before he thought, one paw splashing onto a slick stone. “Wait!” Bao cried, grabbing the back of Sao’s little scarf of fur just as the fox cub skidded and sat down hard.

  • 13

From behind a curtain of roots came Auntie Linh’s calm voice. “I’m right here, explorers.” She stepped onto the bank carrying two soft green float vests and a coil of rope, and Bao’s shoulders loosened. Sao pressed his damp paw against Bao’s shoe, quiet enough to say sorry without words.

  • 14

Bao wanted to say he was old enough to be careful by himself, but his hand still remembered how fast Sao had slipped. He looked at the river, then at Auntie Linh. “Can we ride if we stay with you and wear those?” he asked, and the question made him feel braver than pretending.

  • 15

Auntie Linh nodded and helped Bao fasten his vest snugly, then tied a tiny bright band around Sao’s middle like a fox-sized float hug. The river still rushed, but now it sounded less like a dare and more like a drumbeat. Bao took Sao’s paw and waited for Auntie Linh’s nod.

  • 16

Ahead, the river split around a silver island, and the smaller channel sparkled like it was winking. Sao leaned forward, tail twitching, but Bao remembered Auntie Linh’s hand on the mooring rope. “Pretty isn’t the same as safe,” he whispered, and kept both feet still.

  • 17

Auntie Linh guided the boat toward the wider water, where root-lanterns glowed steady and calm. Bao’s life vest bumped softly against his chin as he sat tall. Sao touched his star pendant and said, “We can be explorers who ask first.” Bao grinned. “The best kind.”

  • 18

At the river’s bend, a woven gate of glowing roots lowered until it nearly kissed the boat. Auntie Linh stopped and waited, palm raised. Bao waited too, even though his knees fizzed with excitement, and the roots slowly lifted into an arch of honey-colored light.

  • 19

Beyond the arch, the hidden river carried them into a quiet pool under an opening to the forest sky. Fireflies drifted down like tiny moons. Auntie Linh tied the boat before anyone climbed out, and Bao waited for her nod before helping Sao onto the mossy bank.

  • 20

Later, wrapped in a blanket on the bank, Bao watched the boat rock gently at its rope. Sao curled against his side, warm as a little sunset. “We found the hidden river,” Bao murmured. Auntie Linh smiled. “And you found the safest way back.”
