Maya’s Small Bathroom Surprise

Maya looked at her yellow bus by the door. She remembered the tiny wiggle low in her tummy. It had come before the wet feeling. “The wiggle was telling me,” she said. Her grown-up nodded. “Yes. Next time, that wiggle can help you come sooner.” Maya touched her tummy softly. It felt quiet now.

Maya carried her yellow bus back to the rug. Toast smelled warm. A bag waited by the door. “You told me, you changed, and you washed, little one,” her grown-up said. “That is how we take care of a surprise.” Maya lined up the bus at the cushion tunnel. “Next stop, bathroom faster,” she whispered.

Maya drove the yellow bus around the rug. “Brrrmm, brrrmm,” she sang. Then her paws went still. A tiny wiggle pressed low in her tummy again. Not big. Not loud. Just there. Maya looked at the cushion tunnel. She wanted one more drive. Her ears tipped forward. “Is that the bathroom wiggle?” she whispered.

Maya made the bus roll once more. The wheels bumped over the rug edge. The wiggle squeezed a little tighter. Maya’s tail gave a quick twitch. She stood up fast, then sat down again. “Maybe it will wait,” she said softly. In the kitchen, a spoon clinked. Her grown-up looked over. “Maya?”

Maya took one small hop toward the kitchen. “I have the wiggle,” she said. Her voice was thin, like a thread. Her grown-up put the spoon down and came close. “Thank you for telling me. Let’s go now.” They walked together, not running. Maya held the yellow bus tight. The bathroom door was open and bright.

Maya reached the little bathroom mat. She tried to push her leggings down, but one paw tugged the sweater instead. “Oh!” she squeaked. A warm spot came before she was ready. Not as much as before, but enough. Maya’s cheeks warmed. Her grown-up stayed beside her. “You came to tell me. Now we can change calmly.”

This time, Maya knew the steps. Wet things into the tub. Dry cloth against her legs. Find the toes first. She breathed in the soap smell and breathed out. Her grown-up handed her a clean pair of soft blue leggings. Maya pulled slowly. One paw, then the other. “I told you sooner,” she said. “You did,” said her grown-up.

Back in the busy room, Maya parked the yellow bus by the cushion tunnel. Her leggings felt dry and soft. The kettle hummed. Rain tapped the window. Then a tiny squeeze came again, quieter than a tap. Maya put one paw on her tummy. “I feel it, little one,” she whispered. “This time I will say it fast.”

Maya did not race. She did not hide behind the chair. She turned toward the kitchen, where her grown-up was stacking bowls. “Bathroom wiggle,” Maya said, louder than before. Her grown-up smiled with gentle eyes. “I hear you. Let’s go together.” Maya left the bus on the rug and took her grown-up’s hand.

In the bathroom, Maya stood on the little mat. She looked at her sweater first. “Leggings,” she reminded herself. She pushed the waistband down with both paws. It was slow work. One ear flopped over her eye. Her grown-up waited. “You are noticing. You are trying.” Maya sat down, wobbly but ready.

A little wee came into the potty. Plink. Plink. Maya’s eyes grew round. “Some went in!” she said. “Some did,” said her grown-up. “And if some doesn’t, we still know what to do.” Maya looked at the clean towel, the tub, and the dry clothes waiting on the shelf. Her shoulders felt loose.

Maya washed her paws with bubbly soap. Her grown-up dried between each soft toe. Back on the rug, Maya picked up the yellow bus. “Next stop, cushion tunnel,” she sang. Then she paused and smiled. “And if I feel the wiggle, I can tell.” The morning kept moving, gentle and lilac-bright, for Maya and little one.
