Theo Takes a Curious Look

Mama put one calm paw on the table, not on Theo. “You noticed,” she said. “Can you tell us what helps?” Theo looked at the mango. He looked at his rice. His tummy still fluttered, but the words came. “Side saucer. Farther away. I can smell it, but not touch it.”

“Good telling,” Papa said. He moved the saucer to the far side. Theo leaned forward, just to the edge of comfortable. He sniffed once. Then twice. “It smells sweet and slippery,” he told little one softly. “I am not tasting. I am smelling today.” His spoon paw loosened.

Dinner moved again, slowly. Papa twirled noodles. Grandma tore soft flatbread. Mama spooned lentils that smelled warm and earthy. Theo watched each plate pass by without bumping his saucer. His spoon stayed on the table like a quiet fence. “Mango is still far,” he whispered. His shoulders came down a little.

Theo felt braver for one tiny second. He lifted his spoon and reached toward the mango. The shiny slice wobbled on the saucer. Theo’s paw jumped back, and the spoon clacked on his plate. “Nope,” he said, cheeks hot. Mama only nodded. “That was a lot of noticing.”

Theo looked at his paw. It was tucked against his bib, tight as a little bun. He looked at the mango again. “My paw says not yet,” he told the table. Papa smiled with his eyes. “Paws are allowed to say that.” Grandma moved the bread basket a careful paw-length away.

After two bites of rice, Theo had a new idea. “Can my spoon touch first?” he asked. “Yes,” Mama said. Theo stretched his wooden spoon across the space. Tap. The spoon touched the edge of the mango. It made no splash. It made no shout. It only left a shiny dot.

Theo held the spoon close and peered at the sticky dot. It glowed yellow in the light. He did not put it in his mouth. He touched the dot with one claw tip, then rubbed claw to thumb. “Soft,” he said. “A little slippery.” His tail made one small swing.

“I can smell the dot,” Theo said. He held the spoon under his nose, not too close. The mango smelled sunny and sweet, like a warm kitchen after fruit is cut. “That is my step, little one,” he whispered. Mama passed the lentils to Grandma. Nobody counted. Nobody leaned in.

Theo wondered if his tongue wanted a turn. He lifted the spoon halfway. Then the mango smell felt big again. His ears tucked low. “Too much,” he said, and put the spoon down beside his plate. Papa moved the water cup away from his elbow. “Good telling,” Papa said. Theo took a slow noodle bite.

After a quiet minute, Theo looked at the shiny spoon. “Maybe not my tongue,” he said. “Maybe my lip.” Grandma tore him a tiny corner of flatbread, soft as a pillow. Theo pressed the clean side of the spoon to his bottom lip. Then he stopped. “I felt it,” he said. His tail tapped the chair.

Theo touched the sticky dot again with one claw tip. This time, he brought the claw near his lips and paused. The table stayed soft with small dinner sounds. He licked the tiniest bright speck. His eyes blinked wide. “Sweet,” he said. Then he reached for rice. “I am done with mango for today.”

Mama smiled and slid the mango saucer a little farther away. “Done is a real answer,” she said. Theo’s belly felt calm. His plate had rice, noodles, and one brave mango story. He tapped his wooden spoon softly. “Maybe tomorrow I will look again, little one.” The table kept moving, warm and easy.
